Stewed Apples; A Fall Must Make

Warm, mildly sweetened, and spiced, tenderly cooked apples can be comforting and delicious with everything. Stewed apples are great with meals that are savory or sweet. Serve it as a topping to flavor waffles, pancakes with ice cream, or oatmeal, or serve it alongside crackers and cheese. The topping of Brie baked to perfection with pecans is a dream!

The stewed apples and cinnamon are easy to make. When it’s autumn, I whip them up while making waffles and pancakes on the stove or making oatmeal. However, they can also be prepared and kept in the fridge or the freezer for later use.

A Quick Guide: How to Make Stewed Apples

This recipe is adaptable because it can be prepared using your preferred baking apples, and the sugar can be adjusted according to personal preference. The softer the apples, however, will cook faster. I usually stick to apples that are more suitable to be used in pie, such as King, Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Cortland, or Pink Lady. They hold their shape well and are less likely to break. Heirloom varieties available at the local market or orchards are always a good choice!

In the end, Here’s how you can cook these delicious stewed apples (see below the recipe card for the full recipe):

Then cut and peel your apples.

Next, boil the cinnamon, apples, and sugar, then cook for 5 minutes.

Finally, Add a slurry of cornstarch to the apples to thicken them. Then, please bring it to a boil and take it off the heat.

The apples will become thicker when cool, creating the most creamy, rich texture. Try a taste to see if you like the sweetness. you can add more maple if you want.

Do You Need to peel Apples before slicing them? This is entirely dependent on you. I love the feel of apples that have been peeled; however, if you’d prefer to keep the skin intact, it is okay!

Find the freshest apples at the farmer’s markets or an orchard if possible. Otherwise, use your favorite baking apples! I prefer King, Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Cortland, or Pink Lady. The fresh, the more delicious.

Since apples vary in sweetness, adjust sweetness according to the taste of this recipe. I have found a wide variety of apples that work well in conjunction with the amount of maple and brown sugar used are included in this recipe. If a bit more sweetness is desired and sure, apples can be pretty tart, add a few additional tablespoons of maple or adjust according to your preference.

Freezer Friendly? Yes, please! These simple stewed apples can last three days or more in the refrigerator and quickly be frozen for extended storage.
