Strawberry Chia Watermelon Smoothie
When I was growing up, my grandpa Joe (now 90 years old) had a reputation for being an expert in watermelon cultivation.
The watermelons he grew were always the largest, ripest, and brightest red in town.
You could hear them crack when you cut them, and the air was filled with a melony smell that was hypnotizing.
The seeds were huge and perfect for long-distance spitting competitions. They were the perfect treat for hot summer days.
Perhaps everyone else says the same thing about your grandfather. Joe is the champion in my eyes.
It’s painfully obvious that I love watermelons.
Recently, I realized that I had never tried it in a smoothie. This seems to be the perfect match, especially during summer. It’s amazing how my curiosity brought me to try this delicious treat.
Does it seem simple? Yes, it is. Just six ingredients, 10 minutes, and one blender. Would I want it any other way?
Start with some ripe frozen strawberries and ripe watermelon for a sweet-tart twist.
The lime adds a tartness that balances out the sweetness of the fruit.
Almond milk has a creamy texture. Banana adds natural sweetness and a little more substance.
The mock watermelon seeds add visual appeal as well as nutrition. That’s a beautiful smoothie.
Ingredients
- Watermelon cubed (black seeds removed).
- One cup of frozen strawberries
- Half a medium banana (peeled and chopped)
- Half a cup of plain unsweetened almond milk ( DIY Recipe).
- One medium lime (juiced // one lemon yields about 30 ml).
- 1 Tbsp hemp or chia seeds ( optional).
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients in a mixer until smooth and creamy. Add more almond milk if you want it thinner, or add more frozen strawberries or ice if you want it thicker.
- Add more watermelon to intensify the flavor. If you need more acidity or sweetness, add more bananas.
- Servings: 2 (as written in the original recipe) – add additional chia seeds to mimic watermelon seeds. Fresh is best, but leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to two days.
